HI! Dan Dutterer here:D For a decade now, I've been working with Young People, the Imagination, and Communication together, with, and as "Poetic Justice". I use Poetry as a medium for students from Pre-K to 12th grade to practice and work with to improve their communication skills. This way they can write down what they SEE, THINK, and FEEL on paper, with simply a little more "Pizazz" is all. Practicing anything can always make someone BETTER at something. What I DO with words is help folks see how they can actually PAINT with them...use them to COLOR what they're saying. I want to help students realize they can put the words in their head on paper to express themselves and still use tools they already have.
Thinking we do naturally. Writing is simply an extension of that. One we can do automatically, the other may only require practice, just like riding a bike. This way WE CAN TAKE OURSELVES FARTHER. My whole emphasis is in "THE DOING". I work with students to get them involved...be active...to participate. I open my residencies with an interactive show, or two, depending on the age groups and the size of the classes I'm working with and for. My shows involve students actively helping to TELL the story, as the poem begins to unfold. This helps them perhaps see a different, or clearer message being expressed by being a part of the storytelling. This I use as a stepping stone towards exercises in my writing classes that follow.
Helping them BE, or SEE inside a poem may give students a better, even new perspective on the story and the world around them. You could be staring at fish inside a fishbowl, OR be that fish inside staring out. Its all about "Perspective", where you are, or what you see from there. Altering...or readjusting the way you look at things can put you somewhere else entirely. This "Misplacement" can open doors that take you places you didn't expect and open your eyes to things you've never seen. This is where "Painting With Words" comes to life. I work with folks on writing down what they experience with their senses on paper. I help them communicate the knowledge they have AS THEY SEE, HEAR, TOUCH, TASTE, SMELL, OR "FEEL" IT.
I incorporate what the Final Objectives, Goals, and Themes are into what's being accomplished in my residency. I develop an understanding of our Destination, or Where you'd like me to GO, and I GO THERE. This way I'm headed in the right direction for everyone. So everybody walks away with a sense of accomplishment, as well as some new skills under their belt. I open up residencies with a show, or two, designed for the specific age groups and we start from there. If "Your" objective is for them to write ...we write, but if "You" want them to present something, then we WRITE and REHEARSE for a presentation of poems they've written, or chosen to be performed at The End. It may cut in on time, but writing and presentation go to together like breathing...it keeps things in circulation:D
